Driven
I have always enjoyed writing. When I was in school, I remember that I always wanted to be assigned some sort of creative writing assignment… and I don’t think I ever got that assignment. I was just always waiting.
I wish it had hit me earlier in life that I could just write whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I did not need a teacher’s approval or guidance. It was not important that I received a grade for my creations.
As I am watching my children grow, I hope that I am constantly conveying that reality to them. If you want to be in a play, write one and perform it! If you want to build a clubhouse, maybe start small, but build one! You don’t have to wait for someone’s approval to write a song or learn an instrument or develop your own cake recipe.
So now I’m 36 and I am finally finding more time to write things that I am interested in writing. I’m glad to be able to create, but I am also wondering what more I could have already created if I had started earlier. I have 2 children’s books under my belt, as well as the first season of The Downright Lies Podcast I really enjoyed creating. I am currently working on a second season of DL as well as another serialized story podcast that I’ll announce once I’m closer to completion. If I had started at 10, what else would I have completed?
Who knows?
I suppose there’s no sense in focusing on that unrealized potential. My past has allowed me to be where I am now and I (hopefully) have many more years of productivity.
